Pop Life

October 28, 2011

Some people are surprised to learn I have a weakness for catchy pop songs, as if they think I’d deem myself “too cool” or something.  Well let me tell you, I’m not “too cool” for anything, really, especially if that thing is Beyonce.  I even have a mixed cd in my car which I titled “Beyonce and Beyond” and I cannot deny its power.

True, of late, Bey’s been catching some heat for borrowing aesthetics for her videos and live performances from contemporary artists and performers like Lorella Cuccarini and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, but isn’t imitation the sincerest form of flattery?  In her one of her latest videos, “Countdown”, Lil B also takes a cue from the Audrey Hepburn movie Funny Face.  Original or not, this video is totally awesome and through its controversy we actually get to learn about another amazing artist, De Keersmaeker, whose films inspired the large part of Countdown’s choreography.  Win win!  Here’s the fun, stylish video followed by clips of the De Keersmaeker originals.  Hey, at least Bey has good taste!

And here are a few other amazing Beyonce videos as well as her Cuccarini-inspired performance for the Billboard Music Awards, just for your pleasure.
