Adventures in Styling: Noah and the MegaFauna

July 24, 2011

What the heck is this, you ask?  Well it was my vantage point for much of the day on Friday, when I was lucky enough to do some wardrobe styling on a music video for Noah and the MegaFauna.  While I can’t divulge too much about the video concept (for their  throwback-y, jazz-laced  song “Liquid Modernity” which you can play and download for free on the band’s website!), I can tell you that the shoot called for a vintage nautical style of dress for both the band members and some highly skilled dancers.  My styling mentor, Jade, showed me the ropes as we pulled a rack of beautiful dresses from the 1940’s, 1650’s, and 1960’s, sailor blouses, seersucker suits, short-shorts, straw fedoras, bow ties, suspenders, and much more from the Universal Studios costume house.
Wardrobe was such a big part of this video, especially since lead vocalist Noah Lit’s vision was so specific and cohesive in terms of sound, style, cover art, and lyrics.  I was so proud to be a part of it and can’t wait to show you the finished product once it’s edited!  For now, I thought you might enjoy some sights from the costume house, as well as scenes from the sound stage during the video shoot.  Make sure to check out Noah and the MegaFauna’s website for upcoming shows, photos, and tunes!
Racks of pretty, pretty dresses!
Yes…a Mrs. Doubtfire-esque fat suit was involved!
Jade and I checked out options like this vintage gown for violinist Wen Chang’s ensemble
Though we first thought of this dress for Wen, we decided the twirly skirt with pink and red ribbons would be best suited for one of the dancers.  Once we saw it in motion on set, we knew we made the right choice!
Ultimately, we went with this lacy, fitted dress with metallic threading and pearl details.  She looked like a dream!
Here’s our full wardrobe rack for the ladies on the day of the shoot!  Lots of blues, reds, creams, whites, polka dots, and stripes!
Wen gets a vintage barrette added to her retro-inspired ‘do.

Vocalist Emily St. Amand-Poliakoff gets her makeup done by Marci (who moonlights as Jade’s mama!)
Cute couple/bandmates Wen and Gabriel Lit check out some pictures
Now in full bombshell mode, Emily plays with our mascot, Bonzo!
The full band on set!
Wen is ready for her close-up!
Jade suits up our vaudevillian villain, Danny.  A cross between Moulin Rouge‘s Harold Zidler and Rip Taylor.
Jade gets into character for a cute cameo!
Adorable extra, Sarah, looks sweet in her sailor dress and Pollyanna hat!
It was like West Side Story! I was dying….god bless those dancers!
Just like the old-timey days!
Emily and Danny ham it up!
Travis, the director, plans moves with the choreographer.
Noah and the mini fauna, Jade!
Moobs!
Check out these babes!
Um…speaking of babes! Ps, this was not even staged.  She’s just that cute.
And yet another babe!
Two of the talented dancers indulge me in a little pose!

Ashley! What a great blog and photo journal of our epic shoot! I’d love to see more of what you captured behind the scenes. You were so great in helping everyone come to life in our mish-mash of styles and melodramatic story! Thanks a million
